Mary Jacobs: I'm 61 years old. Forty of those years were spent fishing in Alaska for salmon, herring, crab, shrimp, and halibut. Most of my close family is still based out of Kodiak so I return frequently. I have built a house on the Oregon coast and am enjoying a break from frozen ground, slick roads, and disappointing gardens. I miss my Alaskan friends. I miss the work ethic, survival and endurance ability that so characterizes Alaskans. I am consoled with a few good friends in Ophir, long walks on the beach, bike rides up local canyons, or hours of weeding while listening to audio-books.
